By scheduling an appointment for a consultation, you agree to SELS policies. Multiple violations of SELS policies will limit your access to SELS services.
A consultation refers to a scheduled appointment with a SELS consultant and does not include drop-in hours (when available).
Undergraduate students can have two consultations per week, one per day.
Undergraduate students may schedule as many appointments in advance throughout the semester as they would like as long as they do not schedule more than two appointments per week and no more than one appointment per day.
Graduate students, professional students, and visiting scholars are not eligible to use SELS. There are resources available to graduate and professional students including self-study resources available at esl.umn.edu, courses available through the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP), and language workshops offered through the Graduate School. Other resources available to graduate students include Student Writing Support or Academic Skills Coaching. If you are a graduate or professional student seeking one-on-one English support similar to SELS, we also invite you to fill out this short survey about your interest to help us explore the possibilities of offering similar services to graduate students in the future.
If you cannot come to your scheduled consultation, you must cancel 24 hours in advance. This gives other students a fair opportunity to use SELS services. Multiple late cancellations will result in being ineligible to schedule SELS appointments for the remainder of the current term, though drop-in hours (if available) may still be used.
To cancel your consultation, simply delete the appointment on your Google Calendar and click on "send" us a message as seen below:
1. Go to your Google Calendar and select the appointment that you would like to cancel.
2. Click on the trash icon to delete the appointment.
3. Click "send" to send SELS a message that the appointment has been canceled.
No-show
If you do not come to your scheduled consultation, you will be marked as a “no-show.” Multiple no-shows will result in being ineligible to schedule SELS appointments for the remainder of the current term, though drop-in hours (if available) may still be used.
You must submit an information form for each consultation before scheduling an appointment on the Google Calendar. If you do not fill out an information form, we may decline your appointment.
Please email SELS at eslehelp@umn.edu if you will be late. While you can start your consultation late, it will still end at the regular time (45 minutes after the hour). If you are more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, SELS staff may cancel your appointment.
Only undergraduate students currently enrolled for courses at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities students may use SELS services.
SELS is committed to providing equitable access to learning opportunities for all students. The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is the campus office that collaborates with students who have disabilities, including mental health and medical/health conditions, to provide and/or arrange reasonable accommodations. Please send any accommodation requests to eslhelp@umn.edu so that we can make sure SELS is accessible to you. Additional information is available on the DRC website: https://diversity.umn.edu/disability.
