Things You Want to Know About MAS

What does MAS stand for?

It stands for Manga Anime Society. We are a student run anime club at the University of Minnesota!

What do you do?

Watch anime! Every semester we vote in a handful of shows to watch together as a club! You can check out what shows we are watching this semester by checking out our Current Showings, and see the exact schedule lineup on our Fall 2020 Schedule Post.

We also hold extra events throughout the semester. These include celebrating Halloween with a little optional Cosplay, and Valentine’s day with some sappy romance focused anime!

Finally, at the end of each semester we have The Craptacular, a night of glorious debauchery, whereupon we watch bad anime purely because it is bad, and dubbed anime because we're just that twisted.

Where and When does MAS take place?

MAS takes place in Moos 2-580 (map). MAS begins at approximately 6:30PM every Thursday with a pre-showing (sometimes people are there earlier) and runs until around 10:00 p.m. Note however, that MAS does not meet on designated UMN holidays - only while classes are in session. Spring break notwithstanding. On occasion, we may be forced to relocate (such as over Summer session) so keep an eye on our website and Discord for updates.

Now that I know where it is, can I go?

Anyone can come to MAS. You don't necessarily have to be a UMN student or a club member, you just have to like anime. You really don't have to even like anime, as long as you're quiet during the showing. However, you should be at least affiliated with the University of Minnesota. 

NOTE for Non-Students: As of December 2019, public building hours for our meeting place (Moos Tower) have changed. Non-students cannot get into the building without a student escorting them. If you are not a student and wish to attend our club, please message us on Discord, or email us at mangaanimesociety@gmail.com and let us know what door you are at, and we can send a student to escort you to our club room.

Also it should be noted that we are a college club full of college aged people, and we will choose to watch shows with mature content aimed at an adult audience, so we suggest that club members are 18+ years of age. We won’t turn anyone away though! Email an officer at mangaanimesociety@gmail.com if you have specific questions. 

Can we watch this show I like?

The shows we watch are voted in by paid MAS members before the semester begins. Once the shows are selected, we make a schedule and stick to it so we can get through the entire season of every show. If you have a great show you want to watch next semester, nominate it! Note that nominations can only be made by paid members and must follow our nomination guidelines. What does a membership do for me, and how much does it cost?

To become an official MAS Member, all we require is that you pay us $6. (The Membership fee has been temporarily reduced to $3 for the Fall 2020 Semester). You get the following benefits from becoming a member.

• 1. You are allowed to nominate and vote for our show selection process each semester.

  2. Free food and drink at MAS events such as our MAS-o-Ween (Halloween), Love Love Valentine's Day (Valentines), The Craptacular, and Social Nights.

  3. You get a MAS Membership card with a design from one of our current showings.

  4. Access to borrowing items from our MAS Library.

1. A purple role color on our Discord, that shows your support of our club!

Membership must be re-registered each semester. Registration will be announced at the begging of each semester by club officers. You can become a member later if you missed the initial registration time. Contact an officer on Discord, Facebook, or email us at mangaanimesociety@gmail.com for later membership.

I have to pay to watch anime?

No! MAS will never ask you to pay to watch anime or to be apart of our club. All meetings and events are free excluding the food and drink we serve. We ask for membership fees as that is how we fund our club activities. Watching anime will always be free at MAS.

I want to help out!

If you have an idea for the club, or want to be a part of planning things join us at one of our Officer Meetings. These are usually held once a month at 5 p.m. on the first floor of Moos Tower. Dates and locations will be announced on our Discord and Facebook. You can also become a volunteer on Discord by talking to an officer. Discord volunteers get to see how MAS behind the scenes works outside of meetings!
