About Dr. Holinstat

Dr. Michael Holinstat is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, the Department of Internal Medicine (Division of Cardiovascular Medicine), and the Department of Vascular Surgery at the University of Michigan. He is also a fellow of the American Heart Association. Dr. Holinstat’s research interests focus on understanding platelet signaling and function and how it relates to regulation of hemostasis and thrombosis in order to develop novel therapeutic approaches for prevention and/or treatment of thrombotic diseases. Additionally, Dr. Holinstat has been the inaugural Director of the Platelet Physiology and Pharmacology Platelet Core since 2015 and serves on several national boards including the sub-committee on Hemostasis and Thrombosis at the American Society for Hematology. Dr. Holinstat has received several national awards including the Kenneth M. Brinkhous Young Investigator Prize in Thrombosis from the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology in 2012, the Young Investigator Award in Structure-Function from the Eicosanoid Research Foundation in 2013, and Distinguished Educator: Mentor Innovation Award from the Association for Clinical and Translational Science in 2024. Dr. Holinstat holds the invention patents for a number of novel antiplatelet drugs that are in various stages of development including the A) first-in-class 12-lipoxygenase inhibitor which is in clinical trials for the treatment of heparin-induce thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (HIT) and the 2) prostacyclin receptor agonist. Dr. Holinstat has been continuously funded by the NIH since 2005.
