The Carruthers lab training philosophy is comprised of several key facets.
First, training must involve multidisciplinary themes so that trainees are versed in at least three areas including cell biology, molecular genetics, immunology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and “omics” approaches.
Second, we develop a training plan with all new trainees that includes opportunities to: (a) hone written and oral communication skills by writing papers and fellowships and giving seminars; (b) network with colleagues and potential future mentors at meetings; (c) develop critical thinking skills by participating in our journal club meetings and helping to review manuscripts; and (d) foster time management and team skills by simultaneously pushing forward multiple projects including contributing to the work of others in the group.
Third, trainees are engaged in multiple simultaneous lines of investigation, and in some cases are pursuing disparate projects that foster breadth of knowledge and skills.
Finally, we strike a balance between providing regular guidance during our weekly group meetings and our biweekly one-on-one meetings while encouraging the development of independent thinking and ideas by the trainees.
This training philosophy has helped seven of the Carruthers lab former trainees secure faculty positions at research-intensive universities including Cornell University, Clemson University, Virginia Tech, Sun-Yat-Sen University (China), and the University of Michigan. Other trainees are in successful careers in science writing and outreach, nursing, biotechnology research, pharmaceutical research, public health, and clinical laboratory microbiology.
The Carruthers lab looks forward to future opportunities to mentor aspiring young scientists pursuing research careers in biomedical research. We welcome all individuals regardless of their background, race, religion, gender and gender identity, political views, sexual orientation, or disabilities. We especially encourage dedicated and ambitious individuals who treat others with respect, kindness, inclusion, and understanding to join our team.
