Weaving African Culture with STEM

I am working on designing programs to recruit individuals not typically represented in STEM areas. I purposely want to blend the experience and knowledge I acquired working on the African continent with my STEM background to create innovative teaching strategies to reach students in non-typical settings, i.e. using African art and culture to leverage student historical background and draw them towards STEM. With the help of 2 UROP students, I have created teaching modules to be used in classroom or after-school settings. The teaching modules include hands-on activities using weaving cards and small looms to illustrate mathematical concepts, from symmetry to fractals.
