Ukrainian Art in the Shadow of the War: Freefilmers’ Documentaries and Short  Experimental Films from Eastern Ukraine, Screening and Discussion

Introduction: Hanna Deikun, graduate student, Department of History.
Moderators: Hanna Deikun and Mahew Kendall, Dept. of Polish, Russian, and Lithuanian Studies.

           Summary

Freefilmers is a Mariupol-based collective of Ukrainian filmmakers and artists who have been focusing on the realities of life in Eastern Ukraine since 2014 (the years of the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation and the beginning of the so-called hybrid war in Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Eastern Ukraine). With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as their native city, Mariupol, was besieged by Russian troops, forcibly displaced members of the community started building a solidarity network to support their compatriots who are suffering from and fighting against invasion. We invite you to join this solidarity screening in order to learn more about Ukrainian resistance art movements and support their community.
