The talk will offer an overview of the politics of memory and history in contemporary Ukraine, focusing on the most controversial aspects of the country’s past and its relationship with Russia.

Dr. Andriy Kohut is Director of the State Security Archive of Ukraine, which stores the largest collection of declassified KGB files. Dr. Kohut received his Ph.D. in History from Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, and his M.A. in History from Ivan Franko Lviv National University. His research and professional interests include Soviet population politics (deportations), the history of Soviet secret services, the politics of memory and cultural diplomacy. Prior to assuming his current position, Dr. Kohut was director of the “Digital Archive of the Ukrainian Liberation Movement” (avr.org.ua). He is an author, co-author and co-editor of a number of monographs and collections, including “Chernobyl KGB Dossier”, “Crimean Tatar National Movement in 1917–1920. Documents from the Archives of the Communist Secret Services”, “The Great Terror in Ukraine: German Operation 1937–1938. Collection of Documents”, “KGB Archives for Media” handbook. His current research project explores Stalinist population deportations from Western Ukraine.
