After studying the style and characteristics of realism, impressionism and post impressionism, students in the Grade 11 Experienced Visual Arts class were asked to produce their own work reflecting one of those styles.

Definitions for realism, impressionism and post impressionism are included below the student work.
Realism: attempts to represent subjects truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding the implausible. It is sometimes referred to as naturalism. Some artists from this period are: Millet, Homer, Courbet
Impressionism: often focuses on an accurate depiction of the changing quality of light. It is characterized by small, thin, visible brush strokes and open composition. Some artists from this period are: Renoir, Monet, Cassat
Post Impressionism: emerged as a reaction against the Impressionists' focus on natural depiction of light. Some artists from this period are: van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse
