General Service or NCCS
The pediatric neurology service is divided into General Service (GS - covers inpatient ward, ED consults, outside calls) and Neurocritical care service (NCCS - covers PICU, PCICU, and NICU across multiple sites). Only senior pediatric neurology residents, PICU fellows, senior adult neurology residents and senior Pediatric residents will be scheduled for NCCS. The NCCS resident will serve as a floating resident in the afternoon to assist with General Service consults if needed.
If you are on an inpatient rotation (ie. General Service or NCCS), on the first day of your rotation, please meet your team in the Pediatric lounge (Room 4H2.12, door code 8462*) at 8:00 am. We will meet together at the Peds lounge and then walk together to the handover room in the Clinical Services Building.
If you are on a clinic rotation, please watch for a separate email outlining the clinic rotation schedule and helpful hints.
For residents doing call (ie. Pediatric Neurology and Adult Neurology residents), our call is home call. The on-call resident should reach out to the overnight staff, General Service resident and NCCS resident, NP, or day time staff prior to 5pm to receive handover. It is expected and mandatory to take a post call day if you are in the hospital between midnight and 6AM overnight, including on weekends. Our staff are aware of this expectation. If there are any issues, please let us know.
Please see the inpatient call schedule below:
If you are away on any day of the week of service, please email your staff neurologist the week prior. Please cc Dr. Colin Wilbur and pedneuro@ualberta.ca in your email.
HANDOVER:
The first Monday of the week, staff will handover at 9:30am by ZOOM and inpatient learners are expected to attend. Prior to this, the resident on-call over the weekend must contact the senior resident for the week prior to 8:30 am and provide a detailed handover of the patients on service so that residents can begin to round prior to the staff handover.

ROUNDS:
Generally, learners are expected to round on their assigned patients prior to meeting with the attending each morning. Progress notes should be completed in a timely manner for each patient seen. The senior resident on service should be aware of all the pertinent details that pertain to the care of each patient on the team. Patient lists are maintained on Connect Care and off-service learners should request access from the pediatric neurology residents at the start of their rotation. The Handover tool should be used to document active issues and management plans to facilitate safe and effective handover to on-call residents.
CALL:
Residents assigned as first call during daytime hours are expected to be in-house between 8am-5pm. After-hours and weekend coverage is home call. Please contact the attending staff at the beginning of your call shift to exchange contact information and discuss expectations. Our staff are very approachable and you are encouraged to contact them with all issues that arise. We also take outside calls from referring physicians. All consults (including telephone consults) should be documented in Connect Care, reviewed with the attending physician, and the consultation note routed to the attending for signature.
A few more points:
1) We do not accept patients directly unless approved by staff. Pediatric Neurology has admission criteria to which we adhere and which you will need to familiarize yourself with. If you do recommend a transfer to the hospital, please ensure the sending physician has the patient assessed by the Stollery Children’s ER prior to Pediatric Neurology being called.
2) It is the duty of the resident on service during the day to provide hand over to the overnight resident at 5:00 PM. This will include pertinent information about inpatients as well as any potential expects.
Clinics
If you are on an outpatient rotation (clinics), please contact your assigned clinic preceptor at least 24 hours in advance of each clinic to confirm your attendance and details of the clinic (virtual versus in-person, preparation, etc.).
Please see the contact list to know how to contact your clinic preceptor.
