Royal Alexandra Hospital site - Philip C. Etches NICU
The Philip C. Etches NICU at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is one of the largest inborn units in Canada, delivering approximately 5000 babies per year. This is a state-of-the-art NICU with 69 level III and level II beds. Our prime interest is in the high-risk perinate which involves perinatal collaboration with the Maternal/Fetal Medicine Program located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. We have a particular interest in the clinical management of refractory respiratory failure, including the use of nitric oxide and high frequency oscillatory ventilation. All premature infants less than 32 weeks in northern Alberta are admitted to this unit.
University of Alberta Hospital site - David Schiff NICU
The David Schiff NICU at the University of Alberta Hospital is a 18-bed neonatal unit that provides care for neonates requiring specialized surgical services available only at the University Hospital. The program takes out-of-region referrals from Northern Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and Western Canada. Our neonatal transport team of highly trained nurses and respiratory technicians travels by air and by land to pick up infants requiring intensive care. Close to 500 children are transported each year. The sub-arctic intelligent neonatal transport isolette (SAINT), which was developed at the Stollery, provides a controlled and monitored environment in which to safely transport critically ill infants in sub-zero temperatures.
The Grey Nuns Community Hospital delivers approximately 4500 babies per year. The neonatal intensive care unit has 25 beds. Infants ≥30 weeks' gestation are admitted to this unit and may receive ventilatory support for up to 24 hours on site. The NICU is provided with 24-hour coverage each day by neonatologists in the region and continues to evolve with respect to managing patients with more complex needs.
Provides support to Regional Neonatal Program by providing services to babies born after 32 weeks' gestation and requiring extra medical care. The Misericordia level II unit has 15 beds.
