Many learning opportunities exist for training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine:
Medical Students - We have medical students that rotate through our NICUs either on rotation or as a shadow experience. The Medical Student Clerkship rotations occur in the Misericordia and the Grey Nuns NICUs. We also welcome students who are interested in elective time with us.
Residents - Pediatric Residents join us in the NICU for 1 block in every year of training. They begin at the Misericordia Hospital NICU in their first year, and then with subsequent years, work through more intensive Level 3 NICU experiences at the David Schiff NICU at the University of Alberta Hospital and Philip C. Etches NICU at Royal Alexandra Hospital, and Grey Nuns Level 2B NICU. We welcome resident trainees from Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and other disciplines who are interested in elective time with us. To maximize the elective experience, it is beneficial to discuss the learning objectives with the resident coordinator to find the appropriate location and duration of the elective (Dr. Krystyna Ediger).
Observerships - We welcome international trainees including medical students, residents, and fellows. Generally, Observerships require a minimum of 3 months to organize and are a duration of 2 to 4 weeks. To maximize the observership experience, it is beneficial to discuss the learning objectives with the resident coordinator to find the appropriate location and duration of the observership (Dr. Nicole Anderson).
Neonatal-Perinatal Subspecialty Residents and Clinical Fellows - The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Training Program at the University of Alberta offers training with a strong clinical program complemented by a diverse and supportive scholarship environment. Training is typically of 2 years duration. Additional information can be found here.
Departmental Fellowships - Trainees with existing clinical training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine may pursue training at the University of Alberta focused on scholarship and/or specialized clinical skills in Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (TnECHO), Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP), Neurocritical Care, POCUS, Transport, and Neonatal Research. Training is typically of 1 year duration.
