The program provides state-of-the-art neonatal care to all babies born in northern Alberta, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, northern British Columbia, and western Saskatchewan. The northern Alberta region has approximately 29,000 deliveries per year with 18,000 of those deliveries in the Edmonton area. Edmonton has five neonatal units which provide regionalized care with approximately 3500 admissions/year. The Philip C. Etches (PCE)-NICU, a combined level 3A and 2 unit, has 69 beds and is affiliated with high-risk Perinatology and includes clinical management of high-risk prematurity, refractory respiratory failure, including the use of nitric oxide and high frequency oscillatory ventilation (approximately 1400 admissions/year). All premature infants less than 30 weeks in northern Alberta are admitted to this unit. The David Schiff (DS-NICU), a surgical/cardiac level 3C unit with 18 beds, has approximately 540 admissions/year. It has a very active cardiac and cardiosurgical service for neonates referred from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon. It provides other specialized services such as Neurosurgery, Neonatal General Surgery, ENT, and all Pediatric subspecialties. The DS-NICU cares for neonates at timepoints both pre- and postoperative. The DS-NICU also provides a nurse‑clinician based transport program (800-900 transports/year). The Grey Nuns Hospital (GNH) NICU, a level 2B unit, has 24 beds and approximately 1300 admissions/year admitting ≥30 weeks' gestational age, the Misericordia (MIS) Hospital NICU is a level 2B unit with 21 beds, and the Sturgeon Hospital NICU, a level 2B unit with 8 beds. The combined number of admissions and broad range of clinical problems encountered offers comprehensive clinical training in Neonatology.
There are twenty-nine Neonatologists in the Program with interests in Clinical and Basic Research, Education, Epidemiology and Neurodevelopmental Follow-up. During daytime hours, there are two attending Neonatologists at the University of Alberta Hospital, four Neonatologists at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, one Neonatologist at the Grey Nuns Hospital, and one attending at the Misericordia hospital. The volume and broad range of clinical problems encountered offers very comprehensive clinical training in Neonatology.
There is a rich research environment for trainees with recognized leaders in the fields of neonatal resuscitation, cardiovascular effects of hypoxic-reoxygenation injury, NIDCAP, qualitative research, and neurodevelopmental follow-up of complex therapies. Masters and PhD programs, as well as successful completion of the RCPSC Clinical Investigator Program have been supported by our Neonatal-Perinatal program. Trainees are financially supported to attend conferences and other educational opportunities, with further support if they are presenting research.
In addition to the comprehensive and flexible learning environment, Edmonton offers many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, recreational activities and the arts in both the warm and cool seasons.
