Postgraduate training in Adult Hematology is a 2-year Residency Program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Residents rotate through clinical and laboratory rotations including:
hematology ward
hematology consult services (UAH, RAH)
malignant hematology (lymphomas, myeloma, chronic leukemias, auto-transplant, CAR-T therapy)
hematological pathology (transfusion medicine, morphology, specialized hematology lab testing)
allo-transplant
specialized clinics (bleeding disorders, hemoglobinopathies, MDS, leukemia, MPN, obstetrical hematology)
thrombosis
longitudinal clinic
research
electives
Training will occur mainly at the University of Alberta Hospital, Kaye Edmonton Clinic, Cross Cancer Institute, and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The transplant rotation is done at the Arthur Child Cancer Centre in Calgary. Accommodation and transportation expenses for the transplant rotation are reimbursed by Alberta Health Services as per PARA agreement 34.01.
Academic programing includes academic half day, conference leave, Hematology Grand rounds and other clinical rounds (ex. leukemia rounds, lymphoma rounds), Transfusion Medicine Bootcamp, and journal club. Residents are expected to complete a scholarly project during their 2 year residency.
On call responsibilities include home call, with exposure to providing phone advice to other physicians requesting hematology phone consultation, starting in Core of Discipline. There are no in house call requirements for our program.
Our program successfully underwent the most recent cycle of Royal College Accreditation in 2025, and was awarded full accreditation with regular review in 8 years.
