Energy Changes in Chemical Reactions Lab

Question: Does temperature increase, decrease or stay the same in a chemical reaction?

Hypothesis: If two reactants are combined, then temperature will________________ because...

Materials:

- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda

- 10 mL Vinegar

- Baking Soda Solution: 2 Tablespoons baking soda in 250 mL water ( you will need 10 mL)

- 1/2 teaspoon calcium chloride

- Thermometer

- Beaker

Safety: GOGGLES MUST BE WARN AT ALL TIMES if calcium chloride is on skin WASH SKIN IMMEDIATELY.

Procedure:

1. Place thermometer in vinegar. Record Temperature in data table

2. While thermometer is in the cup add all baking soda.

3. Observe changes in temperature. Record temperature until temperature has stopped changing.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 with baking soda solution and calcium chloride.
