Monthly Thematic Letter

February 1, 2019

Dear Parents,

Happy February! Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow – will we have six weeks more weeks of winter or an early spring? We have a new month with a new pattern – very exciting. J Our pattern is an AABB: socks and mittens (we will be discussing things that come in pairs).

The overall theme will be “Healthy Helpers.” Some of the related topics we will discuss are: reviewing body parts, body senses, foods help keep us healthy and not healthy and talking about and graphing our favorite healthy snacks. We will learn about the new food pyramid/plate and conduct two science experiments regarding the importance of covering our sneezes/coughs and taking care of our teeth! We will talk about trying not to spread germs by covering our mouths when sneezing or coughing, and washing our hands with soap and water. Speaking of germs and staying healthy, as always, we very much appreciate any contributions of baby wipes, tissues or paper towels to our classroom. Thank you very much for all your contributions.

We will graph our favorite foods and use one word to describe that food. For example, my favorite food is popcorn, it is crunchy! We will ‘pack’ our own lunch box filled with our favorite foods by looking through magazines and flyers. We will also be sorting foods into two piles: healthy and unhealthy. We will be going ‘grocery shopping’ and following two step directions.

On Tuesday, February 5th, the four year old classes will participate in our very own exercise day! We will rotate around to each classroom where there will be different Olympic events using our different body parts. After ‘competing’, we will stretch our muscles and please provide each child with a healthy snack. Please have your children wear sneakers to school on Tuesday, February 5th for these fun activities!!!!

As it gets closer to Valentine’s Day, we will discuss our street addresses, stamps, the job of a mail carrier, how to mail letters etc. We will also discuss how it is a special time to tell people you love them and do nice things for our family and friends. We will be making very special valentines to send home to our loved ones.

Our classroom holiday parties will take place for the AM session Thursday, February 14 and the PM session on Wednesday, February 13. Thank you to our room mothers for organizing another class holiday party and of course, thank you to our parent volunteers! Also please send in completed valentines (previously written on and sealed envelopes) and mailboxes for your child to ‘mail’ their cards at our holiday party by Wednesday, February 13. The mailboxes can be made out of shoe boxes, tissue boxes or any other small box and it can be decorated however your child would like using glitter, stickers, markers, paint, construction paper etc. Please make sure there is a small slit at the top for mail. There are 16 children in the AM class and 15 in the PM class – I will attach a class list of all the children names in our class. Thank you!

Miss Heather
