Course Description: This is a second course in algebra. Topics covered include: solving quadratic, rational and radical equations, simplifying rational and radical expressions and complex numbers, and solving application problems.

Prerequisite: A "C" or better in MATH 95 or equivalent or qualifying ACCUPLACER, ACT/SAT test results.

Textbook: Martin-Gay BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, 5th Edition (Publisher is Pearson) With MyMathLab (Or you may purchase a stand-alone MML access code which gives you a printable or an electronic book)

Calculator: A TI-83 (or other) graphing calculator is recommended. TI 83 calculators can be rented for $20 per semester in the Math Tutoring Center at TMCC in Vista B106. Calculator use is a component of this course.

Attendance:

There is no in-class attendance for this course. However students must complete all assignments, quizzes and Tests in order to take the Comprehensive Final Exam at the end of the course, ON THE TMCC CAMPUS. If you are not in the Reno area, you may make arrangements to take the final exam in a supervised setting. Please contact your instructor for further instructions.

Students must obtain a TMCC e-mail account in order to receive e-mails from me regarding any updates or class cancellations due to weather (you can also check the TMCC website). If sending me an e-mail, please include your first and last name and Math 96 on-line course.

Assessed Course Outcomes:

Outcome Statement 1: Students will demonstrate the ability to solve nonlinear equations using analytic methods.

Outcome Statement 2: Students will demonstrate the ability to use mathematics concepts in real world situations.

Outcome Statement 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to simplify and perform operations with nonlinear expressions.

Course Objectives:

Students will:

1. Evaluate exponential expressions with rational exponents

2. Use function notation; evaluate a function

3. Solve equations involving absolute value, rational expressions, rational exponents, and radicals.

4. Solve systems of linear inequalities by graphing, and solve non-linear polynomial inequalities

5. Use rational expressions in application problems including ratios, proportions, and variation.

6. Perform complex number arithmetic

7. Solve quadratic equations and inequalities using a variety of methods.

8. Use quadratic equations in application problems.

Academic Responsibilities: You are responsible for your own learning and

· Completing work regularly and on time

· Meeting deadlines as specified by the instructor and in the course outline

· Completing homework assignments, quizzes, and exams as specified in the course outline and MML

· Reading the text before working homework problems

· Viewing the instructional videos before working homework problems

· Solving the Prep-homework problems in MyMathLab

· Getting help when you don’t understand something

· Learning the necessary functions on your calculator

Class Format

Student will do the following BEFORE each textbook homework section

THIS PORTION OF LEARNING WILL TAKE 2 – 3 HOURS FOR EACH TEXTBOOK SECTION outside of class time.

Select the Multimedia assignment in MyMathLab.

1. View the Section Video Lectures for the textbook section. You may also view similar lectures from the Kahn Academy or any other online source.

2. Read the text section in either the Multimedia Textbook or the hard copy textbook. Work all the EXAMPLE problems and checking your solutions in each section.

3. (optional, unless you are behind) View the Power Point for the textbook section. You can find the Power Point for each textbook section in the Multimedia Library in MyMathLab.

Section Video Lectures: These videos are as close as you can get to being in the classroom. The author of the textbook will appear in front of a whiteboard to explain a concept or example. These are excellent for those students who need to see the problem being worked out step by step! Click on the blue link for the video you would like to see. Interactive Concept Check videos will require you to participate by solving a problem and clicking on your answer on the screen. It will let you know if you get it right or wrong and then work through the problem. The regular Lecture Video will not require your participation.

Power Point: This will open Power Point presentations on available subjects. If you have a pop up blocker, you will need to left click on the yellow bar at the top and then click Download File. It will then ask you to open, save, or cancel: click on the open tab. Once the presentation opens, you will need to left click on the mouse to move through the slides.

Multimedia Textbook: This will open the online version of the textbook. Select which section you would like to open from the blue links available. If you have a pop up blocker, you will need to click on the Click Here link. Notice: if you roll your mouse over a Video icon, your mouse pointer will turn into a hand. You can click on the icon to see a video example similar to the ones you see in the book (the video will again be the author in front of the whiteboard). You can also click on the You Try It or Exercises icons to open up a new window that will allow you to practice similar problems and get help if you need it. Note: to change pages, click on the green Back or Forward tabs at the top of the screen or click the white arrows left and right. You can also skip to a page by typing in the page number you would like to open.

Animation: These are videos that explain a topic or work through examples. Unlike the Section Video Lectures, they do not have a whiteboard or person lecturing. You will just hear a voice and the screen will continually update.

II. Prep Section Homework:

Prep Section Homework will be administered through MML. Prep Section Homework due dates are listed in MyMathLab. There are only three attempts per Prep Section homework set. Prep Section Homework not completed by the day prior to the Final Exam date will earn a zero grade.

In order to complete the Prep homework assignment, you will need to score 100% on the Multimedia assignment for the corresponding textbook section.

FOLLOWING Prep-Homework is the HOMEWORK

Homework:

Homework will be administered through MML. You will have homework following every text section. Homework due dates are listed in MyMathLab. There are only three attempts per homework set. Homework not completed by the day prior to the Final Exam date will earn a zero grade.

In order to complete the homework assignment, you will need to score 70% or better on the Prep Homework for the corresponding section.

Some benefits to using MML:

1. For each attempt, you receive immediate feedback.

2. Repetition of homework offers you the opportunity to master concepts and skills and improve score.

3. Print the assignments and enter the answers later, allowing you to do the homework anywhere. Useful if you do not have a computer at home.

4. You have 24/7 access to guided solution, video lectures, and test preparation videos.

5. Access to your grade book to see your scores on assignments at any time.

Quizzes:

Quizzes will be administered through MML. You will have weekly quizzes throughout the semester with 1 attempt for a perfect score. Quizzes not submitted by the stated due date are late and will receive a zero; no exceptions. These quizzes will be based on the homework problems assigned from the book. Since these are quizzes, I cannot answer questions until after the due date. Quizzes are due every Sunday by midnight.

In order to take a Quiz, you will need to score 70% or better on the Homework for the corresponding sections tested in the quiz.

Tests:

There will be 3 tests given during the semester including a comprehensive departmental final; Two mid-term exams and a final exam. The 3 tests will be taken in MML, on a computer. You will have approximately 5 days to complete the mid-term exams. Please treat these as true exams: no notes and no books. MISSED EXAMS WILL be replaced with a zero. All exams must be taken during the scheduled days. Exams are timed, so give yourself 1 hour and 15 minutes of uninterrupted time to take your exam. Once begun, you must complete your exam. THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE TAKEN ON THE TMCC CAMPUS in the Proctoring Center at your selected time DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER. Specific times and dates available for testing will be posted approximately mid-semester. For students away from the greater Reno area, contact your instructor for setting up your final exam location, time and proctor.

Grading: Your final grade will be determined as follows:

Prep Homework + Homework = 5%

Quizzes” = 5%

Tests = 10% (Exam 1 and Exam 2 are worth 5% each)

Final = 80%

A: 90 - 100% B: 80 - 89% C: 70 - 79% D: 60 - 69% F: 0% - 59%

I cannot e-mail grades! If you have questions regarding your grade, please see me in person.

The W mark shall indicate only that the student did not complete a course and must be initiated by the student. Students may withdraw themselves from classes on or prior to the cut-off date.

Ethics Statement: No cheating of any kind will be tolerated. Any student caught cheating; attempting to cheat or assisting in the cheating of another student will receive a failing grade, F.

Before You Begin:

To register for MyMathLab you will need:

þ A MyMathLab student access code (packaged with your new text, standalone at your bookstore, or available for purchase with a major credit card at www.mymathlab.com)

Student Registration:

· Enter http://www.mymathlab.com in your Web Browser.

· Under Students, click Register.

· Read the “Before you start” information and click Next.

· Enter your Course ID exactly as provided by your instructor and click “Find Course.Your course information should appear. If not, contact your instructor to verify the correct Course ID.

· Select Access Code, type your Access Code in the fields provided (one word per field), and click Next. If you do not have an access code, click Buy Now and follow those prompts to purchase and register.

· Read the License Agreement and Privacy Policy and click “I Accept.”

· On the Access Information Screen, you’ll be asked whether you already have a Pearson Education Account. Click:

- YES” if you have registered for other Pearson online products and already have a login name and password. Fields will appear for you to enter your existing login information.

- NO” if this is the first time you have registered for a Pearson online product. Boxes will appear for you to create your login name and password.

- NOT SURE” if you want to check for a pre-existing account and receive an email with your login name and password.

Simply follow the registration screens and enter your information as prompted. You will enter your name, email address, school information, and provide a security question/answer to ensure the privacy of your account.

Once your registration is complete, you will see a Confirmation screen (this information will also be emailed to you). Simply print your confirmation (remember to write down your login name and password) and you are now ready to Log in and access your resources!

Logging In:

  • Go to www.mymathlab.com and click on Log In.

  • Enter your login name and password and click Log in.

  • On the left, click on the name of your course.

The first time you enter your course from your own computer and anytime you use a new computer, click the Installation Wizard or Browser Check on the Announcements page. After completing the installation process and closing the wizard you will be on your course home page and ready to explore your MyMathLab resources!
