For the 2020-2021 school year, I will not be teaching this course. The information below is from the 2018-2019 school year, when I last taught the course.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Per TN Math Standards:
Statistics is designed to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. The major themes include interpreting categorical and quantitative data, conditional probability and other rules of probability, using probability to make decisions, and making inferences and justifying conclusions. For a complete list of standards, visit https://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/education/standards/math/stds_math.pdf.
Per the Dyersburg State Community College catalog, for dual enrollment if applicable:
MATH 1530 – Elementary Probability and Statistics (3 semester hours)
This course emphasizes descriptive and inferential statistics through organization and analysis of data using graphs, probability, probability distributions, one- and two-sample hypothesis testing, correlation, regression, goodness of fit, and tests of independence.
Ms Collier's non-dual class will cover the same material and be graded in the same manner as described below, with occasional opportunities to raise grades via test corrections, etc.
DUAL ENROLLMENT
BHS Statistics can be a dual enrollment class with Dyersburg State Community College. Students will receive a grade for the high school Statistics course and, if in the dual enrollment course, a grade for Elementary Probability and Statistics. There are fees associated with the college portion of the course and some grants are available to supplement a portion of these fees. The college course will be done during the second semester.
CLASS MEETINGS
There is no lab corresponding to this Statistics course. The class meetings will generally be a mixture of lecture and time for homework completion.
INDIVIDUAL AND CLASSROOM SUPPLIES
· All students must have these supplies in class: two sharpened #2 pencils (or a mechanical #2 with extra lead) with erasers, a notebook/binder with pockets and paper, a graphing calculator, and the textbook. The textbook will be Elementary Statistics, 3rd edition, by Navidi/Monk. There will be a small classroom set of textbooks available for use during class and tutoring however.
· Students are requested to bring a dozen blue or black pens, a pack with 100 or more sheets of lined paper, and a box of facial tissue by the end of August. These items will be placed in the roll-top desk in the back of the classroom for student use (along with items from other classes). These same supplies may also be needed in January for the second half of year.
CLASSROOM RESPECT RULES AND PENALTIES
All school policies, such as those for cell phones and dress code, will be enforced per school guidelines. For rules not specifically addressed in BHS policy, see below.
Student will show respect for the:
· teacher – pay attention, not complain, stay on task, wait to be dismissed, etc.
· teacher’s belongings – do not take or use anything from the teacher’s area
· other students – keep hands to self, do not ridicule at all, be helpful and polite, etc.
· learning environment – talk only when others are not, be still/quiet, sit as assigned if applicable, etc.
· classroom – pick up trash, do not write on any wall or furniture or such surface, straighten chairs, etc.
Teacher will maintain a record of rule violations and “reset” at own discretion. Penalties for breaking these are:
· 1st offense – warning (may be repeated at teacher discretion)
· 2nd offense – private discussion with teacher and possible write-up
· 3rd offense – call to parents and write-up
· 4th offense – trip to office with write-up (consequences assigned there)
Note that penalties may also lower grades, exempt one from extra credit, or prevent participation in school activities.
STUDENT WORK RULES AND PENALTIES
Students are expected to pay attention in class and participate as requested. My classroom rule is “If I ask you to work a problem at the board, you must do so.” The addendum to that rule is “If you go to work a problem at the board, you may ask another student to go with you for assistance and that student must do so.” All submitted work must be neat and legible, organized, identified with name and date, and submitted on time for full credit. Late assignments will have a 10-point deduction for each class day the assignment is late and will not be accepted more than 3 class days late. Exceptions are rare.
SEVERE PENALTIES
Cheating on a test/quiz/exam will result in an automatic zero for that assessment and a retake will NOT be allowed. Parents will be called, a grade of “U” in conduct will be entered for the 9-weeks period, and a write-up will result. Aiding another student in his/her attempt to cheat will result in the same penalties. An instance of cheating will also be reported to the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, which could result in expulsion from these clubs. Fighting will always result in a trip to the office (consequences to be assigned there) and a grade of “U” in conduct.
TEACHER CONTACT
My email address is kmcollier@tiption-county.com (please note the “m” after the “k”). Students may NOT come to my classroom while a class other than their own is in session. NOTE: Permission slips for field trips, etc., will only be signed if the student has a C or higher average in the class, is current on assignments, and teacher signature is obtained during student’s own class or before/after school. I will have tutoring after school at least once per week with advance notice being given via remind and posted in the classroom.
ABSENCE POLICIES
Tests/Quizzes/Exams: Student absent on test day but not the previous class day must take a make-up test after school, or perhaps during a directed study, within one week of the student’s return, as arranged between the student and teacher. Student absent on test day and previous day(s) may be extended additional time for make-up as determined by teacher. Tests will be taken in classroom or a nearby classroom at teacher discretion. Student absent on the day before a test, if it was merely a review day, but present on the test day must take the test on the test day unless prior arrangements have been made. However, if the student was absent on the lecture day before a test, student will be allowed one week to make-up the test. If the absence was more than one class day prior to the test, student will take the test as scheduled. Exceptions are rare. All make-up tests are open-ended, regardless of original format. See teacher if you know you will be absent in advance.
Homework: Student must submit the homework on day the corresponding test is taken. Otherwise, it is considered late. A student absent on the test day must turn in the homework on the first day back. Exceptions apply as stated for tests.
Projects: Student absent on the day a project is due must turn in the project on the first class day back. Exceptions apply as stated for tests.
GRADES
There are two sets of grades – one for BHS and one for Dyersburg State Community College. Please note the more stringent requirements for the college courses.
BHS Course
Tests (25% of Nine Weeks Grade)
There will be one test at the end of each nine weeks covering material from two or three chapters. All tests will be individual work without book or notes. Formula sheets will be provided as deemed necessary by the teacher. Students may not share a calculator during a test. Tests must be completed within the scheduled class time. Retakes are not planned.
Quizzes & Projects (45% of Nine Weeks Grade)
There will be two or three quizzes each nine weeks, covering material from roughly one chapter each. Quizzes will be announced in advance. Rules apply as stated for tests. There will generally be one project per nine weeks that will count as a quiz grade.
GRADING CHANGE: Projects may be optional, at instructor discretion. If optional, completed project grade will be averaged into this Quiz category to raise one's grade, but if not mandatory and thus students who opt not to do the project will have only quizzes in this grade category.
Homework (30% of Nine Weeks Grade)
Homework will be assigned after each lecture and will be completed during the second half of the class period. All homework for a given chapter will be collected on test day and graded.
Final and Midterm Exams
A cumulative exam will be given at the end of each semester, but may be given slightly early to accommodate the college schedule. Rules apply as stated for tests. These will not comprise part of the nine weeks grade but are 20% of the appropriate semester grade per BHS policy.
Grading Scale
Per BHS policy: A 93 –100, B 85 – 92, C 75 – 84, D 70 – 74, F 0 – 69 (Nine-weeks grade and midterm/final exams will be +4.)
Dyersburg State Course (if in dual enrollment)
MATH 1530 will be completed during the second semester, although work for it will begin during the first semester.
Requirements and amount of material covered on each applies as above in the BHS Course grade details.
