For the 2020-2021 school year, I will not be teaching this course. The information below is from the 2015-2016 school year, when I last taught the course.
GENERAL INFORMATION
An ACT math subscore of 22 indicates readiness to take any college math class. Students with a math subscore of 19–21 may be required to complete a statistics course or a foundations of math course. Students with a math subscore below 19 will be required to take one to three developmental math courses before the statistics, foundations, or several other college courses. Those developmental courses are called SAILS, meaning “Seamless Alignment and Integrated Learning Support.” It has the same requirement for placement as does high school Bridge Math and many of the same topics are covered. This course will provide the opportunity for a 4th year high school math credit for graduation and completion of the developmental math courses required by TBR (Dyersburg State Community College, University of Memphis, etc.) and UT schools.
SAILS COMPETENCIES
SAILS has five competencies, or study areas, that must be completed with mastery. This course will prepare a student for college-level work. While no credit is given, the courses must be paid for by the student in college if they are not completed in high school. There is no grade associated with the SAILS course, but its completion will be documented so the student may start at the next level in college.
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
Tennessee students must pass four math courses in high school, including Geometry and Algebra 2. The SAILS program, plus one additional chapter, will fulfil the 4th year math requirement to graduate and the course will be listed as “Bridge Math” on a transcript. Grading policies listed later apply to the high school grade only.
