The group was instigated through the Six Strategic Group as a stand alone community service supported by the 5+ Community News, the Norfolk Rural Community Council and South Norfolk Council. Our objective is to support people in need in the local communities in order to improve their quality of life. This will be achieved by volunteers who will provide practical assistance.
The service is provided by local volunteers who all give their time freely. All of them have had Disclosure and Barring checks, which replace Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.
There is a Steering Committee who meet regularly to oversee operations, a group of duty officers who take turn in manning the phone and a host of willing volunteers.
We generally make no charges for our services other than a mileage charge when our volunteers use their own cars and travel out of the area (currently 45p per mile). This means that a journey to the city is around £2.50 each way or the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital £5 each way.
Our income is from grants that we apply for, our own fund raising activities and donations.
