TESDA Showcases Cake Making Skills Through a Competition and Food Fair in Mahaplag, Leyte
Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Leyte headed by Assistant Regional Director/Provincial Director Zosimo T. De Asis through Calubian National Vocational School (CNVS) headed by Dr. Araceli P. Picardal, hosted a competition featuring the baking skills of the Bread and Pastry Production (BPP) NC II graduates during their commencement exercises on September 11, 2020 at New Terminal, Mahaplag, Leyte.
The competitors and winners of the cake decorating competition were awarded with cash prizes and tokens from TESDA Leyte, CNVS, LGU Mahaplag, and 14thInfantry Battalion (IB), Philippine Army.
On the other hand, aside from the 25 graduates of the BPP NC II, the 20 graduates in Salting, Curing and Smoking (Leading to Food Processing NC II) introduced their own made products in the food fair. Such products were made out of the skills they learned within the course of their training with TESDA. The group/association with the highest sales was given with a package of further entrepreneurship training with the Department of Trade and Industry-Leyte.
Ms. Vilma T. Arteche, Supervising TESD Specialist of TESDA Leyte who represented PD Zosimo T. De Asis, said that TESDA is hopeful that through this showcasing of talents through a skills competition and food fair, the graduates would be able to appreciate the trade that they learned as well as practically experience the feasibility of earning income for their livelihood.
Hon. Daisy A. Lleve, municipal mayor of LGU Mahaplag, expressed her appreciation on the conduct of the said skills competition and food fair as aside from being the very first one that was conducted in the municipality, it displayed the latent skills its constituents possess. 14th IB Lt. Col. Roberto B. Obaob also conveyed his gratitude that the troop was part of the closest partners of TESDA in bringing hope to the Filipino people in times of crisis.

TESDA Leyte, in partnership with LGU Mahaplag and the 14th Infantry Battalion, conducted the Opening Ceremony of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC I on Friday, September 11, 2020 to complement the existing agricultural trainings being offered to the surviving families of the victims of the Inopacan Atrocity who lived in the two barangays of Mahaplag: Brgy. San Juan and Brgy. Malinao.
Headed by Lieutenant Colonel Roberto B. Obaob, Commanding Officer of the 14th Infantry (AVENGER) Battalion, several personalities worked together to make the event and the program possible. As the co-lead agency of PRLEC, TESDA Leyte was represented by Supervising TESD Specialist Ms. Vilma T. Arteche while the MTF–ELCAC was led by Hon. Daisy A. Lleve, the Municipal Mayor/Chairperson and was represented by Mr. Jan Rex Yunzal, PESO Manager and Mr. Hubert M. Rodriguez, Head Trainor of Sto. Niño Maritime and Technological Institute (SMTI) and Mr. Nilgen G. Bacoto, OIC of Javier Vocational Training School (JVTS).
Key personalities who witnessed the event were: Hon. Arnolfo B. Lenteria who is the Chairperson Barangay Task Force – ELCAC and the Punong Barangay of Brgy. San Juan, Hon. Fabian Abenoja who is the Barangay Councilor of Brgy. Malinao, Hon. Jose T. Amarado III who is the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) President, and Hon. Lerma Mae B. Cabachete who is the elected SK Chairperson of Brgy. Malinao.
TESDA Leyte and its partner agencies will persevere to work towards the sustained delivery of basic services to not only the said beneficiaries of Inopacan, but also to other Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) and Conflict Affected Areas (CAA) so that more Filipino communities can be transformed into more progressive and resilient ones.

On Friday, Sept. 4, TESDA Leyte conferred two of the most prestigious awards to its deserving awardees.
Ms. Ma. Melba Esquibel was the awardee of the 2020 Idols ng TESDA Award. Such an award is given annually to graduates of various TVET courses from different regions, who are gainfully employed either as wage workers or are managing their own businesses and have contributed to the socio-economic improvements in their respective communities.
Meanwhile, Gov. Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla - represented by Mr. Luis Fernandez who heads the Leyte PRLEC - was awarded the 2020 Kabalikat Award which is given to TESDA’s most active and outstanding partners who have assisted the agency in developing, enhancing and implementing training programs that have resulted in better employability of Filipino skilled workers.
TESDA Leyte is honored to have witnessed how our awardees have become effective catalysts of change and progress in the province. Hats off to you both, Ma'am Maria Melba Esquibel and Gov. Leopoldo Dominico Petilla!

The Regional Awardee for the prestigious 2020 Idols ng TESDA is no other than Ms. Ma. Melba Esquibel. On the surface, Ms. Esquibel is a 29-year teaching veteran, professor, and curriculum developer who worked at the National Maritime Polytechnic. She immersed herself in the conduct of livelihood training programs relating to Cookery and Food Processing. Eventually, her love for TVET pushed her to retire from NMP in 2013 so that she could pursue her dream of putting up her own school.
With a myriad of skills training acquired from TESDA, she founded the Tacloban Central Institute of Technical Studies, Inc. Her untiring commitment and drive resulted in solid innovations such as her tuba-infused recipes which earned the recognition and awards of different organizations.
She holds a Ph. D. in Educational Programs Management and is a TESDA-Certified Trainer, Assessor, and Assessment Center Manager. She sporadically conducts pro-bono livelihood training for the underprivileged sector.
Her splendid performance and the subsequent reward have not come as a surprise. We hope this is just the beginning and we are rooting for you to achieve bigger accomplishments!

Thirty-two degrees in, TESDA Leyte went to Pitahaya Farm located just before the outskirts of Tacloban City to become part of the Launching of Special Training for Employment Program (STEP) for the newest batch of Produce Organic Fertilizer Leading to Organic Agricultural Production NC II composed of 18 trainees.
The event is being spearheaded by Pitahaya Farm School Administrator, Mr. Jose L. Castillejos, Jr. and School Registrar, Ms. Barbara L. Castillejos, who both warmly welcomed the attendees and the key personalities gracing the event.
The team of TESDA Leyte is being led by Supervising Specialist Ms. Vilma T. Arteche and Scholarship Focal, Ms. Amabelle J. Baul.
TESDA VIII Regional Director Dante J. Navarro and VSA Mr. Hector I. Bibar of Bibar's Farm also came to witness this remarkable event which comes very timely as the province tries to counter the effects of the pandemic. TESDA Leyte assures you that we will remain steadfast in fulfilling our aspirations of a progressive Leyte province.
