The Jazz Band is an advanced ensemble that is run for the second semester only. Jazz Band auditions are held at the beginning of December and admittance is upon the completion of a succeseful audition and director approval. This ensemble is made up of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, and a rhythm section (guitar, piano, bass, and drum-set). Students that play "non-standard" jazz instruments are encouraged to audition! Jazz band is a great opportunity for students to learn "doubling" skills.
The band focuses on rehearsing and performing the various styles of jazz, R&B, swing, rock, fusion, etc. Time is also spent in the development and implementation of improvisation skills, along with the basic knowledge of music theory. This group performs in the community as well as at events and festivals like the MSBOA State Jazz Festival, and Winter and Spring concerts. Participation in the Jazz Ensemble will result in mandatory rehearsals and performances.
If you are a student interested in joining the WLW Jazz Band, it is strongly suggested that you plan out your 4-year high school schedule as a freshman to make plans to do so. Please see course description below.
