Course Description
This year long required course is designed to encourage the student to gain a broad understanding of the relationship between the United States and the world. In the first quarter, students investigate the “Progressive Era,” WWI, and the 1920’s. In the second quarter, students will review the “Great Depression,” New Deal, and WWII. The third quarter students gain an understanding of the threat of communism and the development of civil rights. Finally, students analyze the Vietnam War and the era from Reagan to the present.
This course is set up to cover 2 units in a semester. There will be a Benchmark Exam at the end of each of the units. The units will be as follows:
1st Semester
Unit1: Immigration, Industrial Revolution, Progressive Era, Imperialism, Urbanization, World War I, Core Democratic Values
Unit 2: The United States from 1919-1945
2nd Semester
Unit 3: Cold War, Suburbia, Civil Rights and Core Democratic Values
Unit 4: From the Cold War to the War on Terror
Course Materials: You will need the following items every day.
1. US History textbook provided by the school.
2. A 3 ring binder which will be used to organize assignments and activities for the course. This will be collected throughout the semester and graded.
3. Lined Paper or a notebook to take notes on and for daily class work.
4. Writing utensil.
Course Policies
Homework is an integral part of this course. The amount of homework will vary from week to week depending on what the class is working on. In case of an excused absence from school it is your responsibility to make up the work. Work can often times be obtained by referencing the course website.
There will be a blend of daily activities, notetaking, daily activities, unit lesson menus, and project based learning designed to meet the needs of all students. There will be some lessons that are particularly challenging and the goal is to have students think at the highest levels to synthesize the information.
Plagiarism and Cheating: Any copying of any assignment from any class is considered plagiarism and is not allowed. Any student caught copying will receive a zero and the person’s paper they are copying from receive a zero. Copying word from word from a source without giving proper credit and presenting it as your own work is also plagiarism and will result in a zero. If you are caught cheating on a test or quiz you will also receive a zero on that test or quiz.
Grading
Your final course grade is a cumulative total for the semester. The gradebook categories will be broken down into Formative Assessment worth 20% of your grade, Summative Assessment worth 65% of your grade, 15% Benchmark Multiple Choice Test and Benchmark Essay Test. Summative Assessments will be tests, quizzes, major projects, and capstone activities. Report card grades use the following scale.
92-100 = A 80-81 = B- 68-69 = D+
90-91 = A- 78-79 = C+ 62-65 = D
88-89 = B+ 72-77 = C 60-61 = D-
82-87 = B 70-71 = C- 0-59 = E
