Reading in French Immersion

FRENCH IMMERSION

In French Immersion, reading in French, both silently and aloud, is of paramount importance.  From the simple dictée words in grade 1 to the novels and information books used in every grades, the gradual accumulation of knowledge and language cannot be accomplished without daily reading.

By establishing a daily routine whereby your child reads first (20 to 30 minutes) in French before reading in English,  you will greatly enhance your child’s academic success.  By daily reading in French, your child will not only further develop his/her vocabulary, but also strengthen her/his abilities in sentence structure, grammatical accuracy, pronunciation and

reasoning.  Unfortunately, the reverse is also true.  The less your child reads in French, the poorer his/her language abilities will be.  Support your child’s reading in French by finding out what she/he likes. Encourage your child to take out books from the School Library and plan regular trips to the public library.

FINALLY, by becoming an independent reader, your child will develop self-esteem and reasoning powers; will become confident in his/her abilities; and, will be able to relate to the world in a more meaningful way.  It is also important that children see their parents reading and enjoying books.
