Sipoonkorpi National Park

In 2011 the Government of Finland establish a new national park in the vicinity of Helsinki to protect large pieces of wild taiga forest and traditional cultural landscapes. Sipoonkorpi literally means "Sipoo's wilderness" in Finnish (Sipoo is the town name). Tens of rare plants and animal species are found in the park; among them are the Eagle Owl, Capercaillie and Yellow Anemone. The park is inhabited by Elk, Lynx, Red Fox and other forest mammals. In primeval times, the area was covered by sea and glacier, which were grinding its rocky shores, and some curious rock formations, now completely hidden in the wild forest, like the Trolls' Kettles, are scattered in the depth of the park. Several picturesque forest lakes can also be visited.

If the famous Nuuksio National Park is located in 25 km north-west of Helsinki, Sipoonkorpi is the same distance to the north-east of the capital, and can also be easily reached by public transportation. The BioGeo-Traveller organises regular guided excursions to Sipoonkorpi National Park from Helsinki or Vantaa.
