Introduction
After the Treaty was signed in 1840 British settler population grew and outnumbered Maori Population.
British traditions and culture became more dominant and Maori were expected to adopt the Pakeha culture.
The loss of Maori culture and the Maori language went against the Treaty and led to Maori protest. By the 1980s the Government began to recognise and celebrate the culture of both Maori and Pakeha.
Some people say NZ is multicultural and should celebrate the cultures of many different peoples, not just of Maori and Pakeha.
What cultures do you think should be protected and celebrated in NZ?
