MHR Spanish Class:

Although we only meet once a week, my goal is for students to acquire Spanish. Acquiring a language is different from learning a language. Acquiring happens to you as you listen to the language and gradually begin using it. We will review and build on the Spanish that students learn. We will strengthen skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in Spanish. These skills will develop naturally as students listen and read. I will focus on what is called “comprehensible input” and will use a variety of approaches including the TPR (Total Physical Response) and the TPRS method (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). We will play language learning games, do paired activities, listen to songs and learn language through the song lyrics. We will read, create, write and discuss stories in class. We will also create and perform skits or dialogues to retell our stories.

My Background:

My name is Ann Hughes. I grew up in Vestal, NY. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, Minors in Math and Education from LeMoyne College as well as a Master of Science in Teaching, Romance Languages-Spanish from Binghamton University. I was fortunate to have traveled, lived and studied in Spain, Costa Rica and Mexico as well as backpack across Europe. I have taught Spanish and Math for over twenty five years in grades Pre K-12. I enjoy teaching Spanish at MHR Elementary School! I live with my husband and three sons in Manlius, NY. During the summer of 2019, I walked 270 miles on the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) from Leon to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. We visited the Cathedral in Santiago which contains the relics of St. James and then continued on to Fisterra (The End of the Earth) on the western coast.
