Ensuring Online Safety
Choose Consciously
Protect your computer and your accounts: Keep all software current with automatic updating and install legitimate antivirus and antispyware software.
Know the online world
Look for signs that a webpage is secure and legitimate. Keep your personal information safe by checking for evidence of encryption, meaning a web address with https (“s” stands for secure), and a closed padlock beside it.
Engage positively
Share your primary email address and instant messaging name only with people you know in person and with reputable organisations. No matter where or how people access the Internet, exercising positive online behaviour should be a part of our daily online routine.
Be proactive
If a stranger contacts you be sure to:
- Ignore the person
- tell someone about it
- make it a teaching point for future awareness of online behaviour
