Nassau Elementary K-2

About the Music Program

"It is my hope that my students' experiences in music education be so meaningful, memorable, and fun that in thirty years, they will have no choice, but to share these experiences with their own loved ones."

Students in the K-2 music program at Nassau Elementary establish a foundation of musical skills and understanding to foster a life-long appreciation and involvement in music.

All students follow the First Steps in Music curriculum designed by renowned music educator John Feierabend. This curriculum is an essential “musical workout” providing students experiences in:

Pitch Exploration

Song Fragments (echo/call & response songs)

Simple Songs

Arioso (Child-Created Tunes)

Song Tales (songs that tell a story)

Movement Exploration

Movement for Form and Expression

Movement with the Beat

Students will become “Tuneful, Beatful, and Artful”.

In Second Grade, students will be introduced to musical literacy through the implementation of the Conversational Solfege supplemental curricula by John Feierabend. Students will be able to perform various rhythm/solfege (singing syllables) patterns, aurally recognize these patterns, read musical notation using these patterns, write and dictate patterns heard, and compose/create.

Other areas of instruction include world music, instruments of the orchestra, composers, African Drumming, Folk Dancing, Orff Instrumentation, and more!
