Math Homework:
Math Games: Students are assigned a math game to play twice a week. Game time should equal about 20 minutes (this may mean playing the game more than once (which improves game strategy).
When students have a math game for homework the game board can stay at home for continued play. The recording sheet needs to be turned in by Friday.
We do our best to scan the rules of the game and post them on the Homework tab of our websites. Your child will receive a hard copy of the game rules and directions on Monday. We also model how to play the game in class.
Problem of the Week: Problem of the Week is a math problem that helps students with their perseverance and problem-solving skills. We hand out the Problem of the Week on Monday (or the first school day of the week) and they are due on Friday (Students are welcome to finish them before Friday, but we will not collect them until Friday). We go over the various strategies students used to solve the Problem of the Week on Friday morning. Students should show their strategy/thinking in the space provided and write the answer on the line.
The Planner:
Planners are to be taken home and returned every day. Planners are to be signed each night by the parent/guardian who goes over homework, verifying that homework was completed and discussed. Please help your child establish good routines for the rest of the year by asking them about their planner and homework each afternoon/evening. If you have questions regarding homework assignments for the week, please check the Homework tab on our websites.
A note about homework: 4th graders should plan on spending 50-60 minutes a night on homework (includes 30 minutes of reading). Students should never stay up past their bedtime to complete homework. If your child was unable to finish their homework, please write in the memo section of the planner (near where you sign) to communicate with us.
