Search for your state's government professional licensing website and click on the professional licensing board site.
You will see that each state has different requirements for either certifying or licensing addictions professionals. You will see that most states have different levels of certification and license. Often, there are different stages of certification for those who are new to the field and are working towards their certification/license.
Each year, you will have to complete enough clinical and training hours to meet the eligibility requirements to move to a higher license/certification level.
Many states allow brand new employees to begin working in the field without any level of certification/license as long as they register with the professional license board soon after beginning their jobs.
It is recommended that you bookmark your state site. Once you have done this, use 211.org to find agencies and centers near you. Type in your zip code and you will have access to the local edition of 211 (national social service resource line) where you can find information about addiction, mental health, child protection, food shelters, and more.
