Welcome to second grade! I'm pleased to have your child in my class for the 2022-2023 school year. Second grade is a very special year. Students will be receiving two sacraments in the spring, and we will spend a lot of time preparing for these important events! I'm so excited to be teaching for my 17th year at St. Philomena! My husband Tom and I live in Peoria and have 3 sons, Joe (22), Sam (20), and Owen (10) who is in fifth grade at St. Phils. We also have a new family member, 6 month old Ruby, our Aussiedoodle! Please read through the following classroom information, and contact me with any questions or concerns at any time. I'm looking forward to a wonderful year!
Newsletter: I type up a newsletter each week, and it will be emailed to you as well as posted on our class website each Monday. I will not be sending home a paper copy. It will inform you of the week’s activities, upcoming tests, and any needed reminders.
Birthdays: Birthdays can be celebrated with a simple, prepackaged, store-bought treat. Students who have a birthday in the summer may celebrate their half birthday, or wait until the end of the school year. Also, please make sure there are enough treats for 24 students.
T.I.G.E.R Folder: (Today I’ve Got Everything Ready) This orange folder will come home every night with your child and will need to be brought back to school the next day. Located inside their T.I.G.E.R folder will be any homework, notes, and/or returned papers. There are also two sheet protectors. One sheet protector will be for notes/lunch money, and the other will hold a technology login/password sheet.
E-mail/Website/Technology: I will communicate mostly through email, therefore, please make sure we have your correct e-mail address. I have created a classroom website to share information about 2L, as well as links to websites that we frequently use. You can find our classroom website by going to www.stphils.com. Click on the “Visit Our School Website” tab. Then go to the “About Us” tab and click on “Faculty”. Once there type Legate in the first box and it will bring up my information. All you have to do is click on “Website”. We use technology daily in our classroom, especially our Smart Board. I don’t know what I would do without it. We are so blessed to have a classroom set of Ipads! If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me.
Book Orders: This is something that will be sent home once a month. I will send home the flyers at the beginning of each month. You can send back the flyer with one check made out to Scholastic or you may order online. When you order online you help our classroom earn free books for our library. With the first order in September I will attach instructions on how to order online.
Homework: Homework will typically not be assigned. There may be an occasional math paper to reinforce concepts taught. Students are expected to read each night for at least 20 minutes. I know that our lives can be a little hectic with sports and other commitments, but it is so important that your child take the time to read each night.
Discipline: There are five rules for our classroom and the purpose of these rules is to promote a safe, nurturing, and successful learning environment.
Rules:
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Raise your hand to be called on before you speak, and listen when others are speaking.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself at all times.
4. Treat classmates and adults the way you want to be treated.
5. Always do your best work.
Classroom Consequences:
1st time- reminded of expected behavior
2nd time- behavior noted, no pick from Friday prize box
3rd time- behavior noted, no pick from Friday prize box, and lose a portion of Friday free time
4th time- behavior noted, no pick from Friday prize box, and lose all of Friday free time

If there are any questions please feel free to e-mail me at: amanlega@stphils.com. The best way to get in contact with me would be through e-mail, as I check it several times throughout the day. If you need to talk to me in person before or after school, please schedule a time beforehand. With your help as parents we will have a great learning environment and a great school year.
Thank you so much for your support,
Mrs. Legate
