Online Chemistry Placement and Preparation Process (OCPP)

The OCPP Process for Spring 2022 Registration.

Students at Stony Brook University are placed in one of three General Chemistry I offerings as their first chemistry class towards their major. The Department of Chemistry uses the Online Chemistry Placement and Preparation (OCPP) process to not only to place students in the most appropriate course, but also to prepare them for a good performance in the class.

Spring 2022: Only General Chemistry IB, CHE 131, is offered in the Spring semester. This option is appropriate for freshman, transfer, continuing, and non-matriculated students that satisfy the requirements for the course.

Please notice that you will not be able to register in CHE 131 until you complete the OCPP work.

  • Freshman students: the deadline for freshman students to complete their OCPP work is January 3, 2022. If you have any questions concerning Academic Advising for freshman students, including problems with satisfying the deadline, please email them at

  • Transfer students: Incoming transfer students needing to work on the OCPP process for Spring 2022 registration will receive an email from their advising office with a specific deadline date. Please watch your Stony Brook email for this personalized email. Please be patient as emails are sent on a first-come, first-serve basis once transcripts are received, reviewed, evaluated, and posted.

  • Continuing students: the Spring 2022 OCPP ALEKS course closes on January 31 at 8:30 AM. However you should plan finishing the OCPP work well in advance of that date, as it is very likely that by January 15 all seats in CHE 131 will be taken.

Specific instructions for registering in the Spring 2022 OCPP ALEKS course may be found in the section "Registering in ALEKS" in the webpage "Guidance and Instructions" selected from the menu at the top of this page.
