ELA (English & Language Arts)

ELA - Both homeroom teachers will teach ELA this year. Our new ELA curriculum, My View, will consist of reading skills, grammar, writing, and spelling. A major tool students need to succeed in life is good writing. In addition, the third graders will continue to be using the writing process throughout every subject. The students will participate in various writing projects throughout the year, including, but not limited to, persuasive and opinion writing, personal narratives, poetry, how to articles, and research reports.

Reading - In 3rd grade we will be using our fabulous new curriculum My View. The stories are varied in genre and will help students to develop various reading skills. In addition, we will be incorporating Daily 5 rotations for small group reading instruction. This will include the following: read to self, read with teacher, games, spelling practice, and technology. In the afternoons, we will provide students with various novels to increase their interest in reading. Examples of the novels we will be reading are Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane, Charlotte’s Web, Mouse and the Motorcycle, and Frindle. We are looking forward to sharing our love of reading with your child!

Handwriting - Good handwriting is heavily stressed, in both neatness and letter formation. Every assignment turned in is expected to be done neatly. In third grade we will use Handwriting Without Tears for cursive writing. We will begin by doing weekly practices in the workbook and as the year progresses students will be expected to complete various assignments in cursive.

Spelling Third grade will be using spelling patterns and rules that are found in our weekly story. Spelling words will be the student’s responsibility. On Monday, they will copy them in their Spelling notebooks and will review them all week for the test. Spelling and dictation tests will be given on Friday, unless it’s a school holiday.

This website has TONS of activities for students to do. We will be using this site throughout the year for homework and in the classroom. Students in my class will have their log in taped in the front cover of their agendas.
