4th Grade Expectations
*Complete all homework on time. If absent, you need to turn in missed work to teachers as soon as possible. They should not have to ask for it. If you know you are going to be absent for appointments or other reasons, you should see the teacher ahead of time to get assignments.
*Use your planner every day to write down ALL assignments. We will take time at the end of every school day to go over these together. Check them off as you complete them. Get your planner signed every night by your parents/guardians.
*Arrive on time. You will be coming straight to the classroom from the car/bus. Get yourself organized for the day- put things in desk, turn in notes, hang up backpacks, coats, etc. Use the rest of your time before the bell wisely. Work on typing, Moby, or other homework.
*Use flex times and free time wisely too. Time is a gift! Teachers are available for homework help if needed. Don’t be afraid to ask!
*Be responsible for your belongings… keep homework neatly in your folders. Make sure that homework, folders, books get put back into your backpacks to bring back to school. This is YOUR responsibility, not your parent’s.
*Keep your desk and art box area neat and organized. Keep all unneeded items in your art box or bookbag.
*At the end of the day, make sure all trash is picked up around your desk and around the classroom. This is our home away from home. Please help take care of it.
*Most importantly… BE CHRIST to others. Always treat others in your words and actions in the way that Jesus would and in the way that Jesus would and in the way you would want to be treated in return. We are a family and we take care of each other!
Homework Policy/Merits/Demerits
August 1, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back to school! We know that you are both excited and anxious to begin a new year with your student, and so are we! In the intermediate grades students are transitioning from primary to middle school. The level of student responsibility increases. We thank you so much for choosing St. Mary’s to help you on this journey with your child. Please know that we all only want the very best for your child and your family, and we will do all that we can to work as partners in your child’s education.
Homework is very relevant to the learning process, but we do not want this to be overly stressful for your child (or you!). Students do have flex times during the week to help them get work done at school. Teachers are available to help during these times. Students will also receive an assignment book to record daily homework. In fourth grade, it will be reviewed by the teacher at the end of each day all school year.. To help fifth grade students transition into middle school, homework will be reviewed the first 9 weeks. For the remainder of the year, students will be responsible for writing assignments in their books daily.
Attached you will find our merit/demerit policy in regards to homework and behavioral issues. We have discussed this policy with all of the students today, but we wanted you to also be aware of how we will be handling issues that may arise. Two important items: 1. You will need to regularly check the email address that you have registered here at school. Communications regarding merits/demerits/late assignments will come only through this system; 2. There is a mention of no device use during the school day in parent / student handbook. Students will be expected to keep all devices turned off and in their backpacks throughout the school day including dismissal, unless being used for a class project. That means if any transportation arrangements need to be made, you will need to make those arrangements either before your child leaves for school via note or by calling the MAIN OFFICE before 2 pm at 812-663-2804. Thank you for your help in this regard. If you should have any questions about this policy, please feel free to email any of us at our school email.
Once again, thank you for choosing St. Mary’s School, and may we all have a blessed school year!
Sincerely,
Miss Smith ext. 115 rsmith@stmarysgreensburg.com c. 317-762-3943

4th and 5th Grade Merit / Demerit Policy
St. Mary’s students will be both rewarded and disciplined using a system of merits and demerits. These merits and demerits will be logged and communicated to parents through the PowerSchool grading system. Parents should regularly check their email for notification of merits and demerits.
Merits
We have high expectations for our students. With that being said, merits may be awarded by teachers or staff members for outstanding academic or behavioral achievements above and beyond the normal expectations.
Examples include, but are not limited to: exemplary work required for a project, observance of a student going out of their way to help someone, or being of assistance to a staff member without being asked, etc.
Demerits
Demerits are given by teachers or staff members for academic or behavioral issues. Depending on the severity of the offense, a student may be assigned 1-3 demerit points. Repeated offenses (such as two uniform violations) in a 9-week period receive a higher demerit value (2 demerits for the second offense). This does NOT include late homework.
Examples include, but are not limited to:
· Late homework
· Cell phone use
· Uniform violations
· Classroom disruptions and/or inattentiveness in class
· Lack of preparedness
· Inappropriate language
· Physical interactions
· Tardiness
· Displaying disrespect toward students, faculty, staff, or during prayer times
· Inappropriate behavior while using the cafeteria
**In situations where students are continually disrupting the learning in the classroom or other students are feeling threatened in any way, the student may be immediately removed from the classroom.
Consequences of Demerits
As demerits accumulate, students face certain consequences based on the number of demerits logged in a 9-week grading period. The demerit count resets to zero at the beginning of each nine week grading period.
2-4 demerits: Student may be asked to work with a teacher during lunch/recess break to
solve any academic or behavior issues. (This is at the teacher’s discretion,
if she feels it is needed for the student’s success or to prevent further
demerits.)
5 demerits*: After-school work session until 4:00
—these are scheduled on an individual basis
8 demerits*: After-school work session until 5:00
—these are scheduled on an individual basis
10 demerits*: Second After-school work session until 5:00
12 demerits*: In-school suspension
*This may also include the loss of participation in extra-curricular activities, field trips, or
other in-school programs and activities.
In addition, those students with 7 demerits or less earn a special privilege each 9-week grading period. These will be determined by the teachers and will occur during the school day.
During an After School Work Session, a student is expected to work on any late assignment(s). If all homework has been completed prior to the assigned after school time, the student may be given tasks to complete during the session. A student will not be permitted to just sit, sleep, draw, etc. during this time. A teacher will be present to offer guidance, additional instruction, and supervision. Parents should make any necessary arrangements to pick up the child promptly at the end of the work session.
Elearning…
In the event of long term Elearning, demerits will still be given for assignments not turned in by the due date. After-school work sessions will be replaced with a video conference between teacher(s) and student until all missing/late work is completed.
