Welcome to Summer Reading! Elementary School, Rising Grades 2
Summer Reading is a great way to relax and have fun as well as keep up your child’s skills over the summer! Students should try to read at least twenty minutes each day. Research has shown that 20 minutes of reading per day can significantly increase student achievement.
This year each student will be required to read two books over the summer. One book will be a choice from list below in which the student will read in preparation for in-class book circle discussion. The other book will be any other one (not one of the book circle choices AND it must have a beginning, middle, and end) of your child’s own choosing in which he or she will complete a project. Both books and the one project are to be completed by August 20, 2025. We will begin the first day of school with book discussions and activities using our book circle books, and enjoy presentations of our selected books. Books may be obtained from the public library, borrowed from friends or family, or purchased. They may be paper or eBooks. We recommend students read as much as they can independently and then discuss these books with their parents.
Book 1: Assigned Book Circle Books:
PLEASE CHOOSE AND READ ONE of the following:
Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid by Megan McDonald
Sydney & Taylor Explore the Whole Wide World by Jacqueline Davies
Charlie & Mouse (Book 1) by Laurel Snyder
One of the above books must be read by Wednesday, August 20. Activities will take place in class. Students should be ready to discuss the characters, setting, plot (beginning, middle and end). No written assignment or project is required for this book.
Book 2: Student Choice Book
Each student will select a book of their own choice and complete a project chosen from the next page concerning their selection. Books chosen should have a beginning, middle, and end and can be a fiction or nonfiction book. Completed projects should be brought to school by August 20, 2025. Do not use any of the books listed above; however, you are welcome to read a different one from the series. Be neat and have fun! Be prepared to show off your project and encourage someone else to read your book!
A list of book suggestions for Rising Second Graders is included here.
