Recorders

If your student has lost his/her recorder or a piece of the recorder set, please email hhill@stjosephgradeschool.com with the items needed and you will be billed on FACs at the end of the month.

SWBAT: Perform on pitch, in rhythm, and maintain a steady tempo.

SWBAT: Perform using correct technique.

SWBAT: Perform independent instrumental parts.

Reminders:

1. Blow softly (make the candle flicker)

2. Look for 'finger warts' to be sure you are covering the holes completely

3. Left hand on top, right on the bottom

4. Sit tall, with good posture

5. Use the correct fingering for the notes:

• B: Thumb and first finger of left hand
• A: Thumb and first 2 fingers of left hand
• G: Thumb and first 3 fingers of left hand
• E: Thumb and first 3 fingers of left hand and first 2 fingers of right hand
• D: Thumb and first 3 fingers of left hand and first 3 fingers of right hand (be sure to cover both holes)
• C (low): Thumb and first 3 fingers of left hand and 4 fingers of right hand (be sure to cover both holes)
• F#: Thumb and first 3 fingers of left hand and middle and third finger of right hand. (Think of playing a 'D' but lifting your first finger of your right hand.)
• C (high): Thumb and 2nd finger only from left hand (think of putting fingers down for pitch 'A' but lift up the pointer finger.)
• D (high): 2nd finger only from left hand (similar to high C, but without the thumb on the back.)

Self Corrections:

If Squeaking - blow softer and be sure to cover the holes COMPLETELY with the center of your fingers. Don't forget to check your thumb!

If notes sound like the same pitch - be sure you are pressing hard enough to cover the holes, check for finger warts on 6 fingers and your thumb.

If tune sounds strange - be sure you are moving the correct fingers for each pitch.

If notes sound very high - be sure your left thumb is completely covering the hole on the back and both holes are covered by your 3rd finger of your right hand.
