Anecdotal Records

Taking anecdotal notes as a child reads is an informal way of assessing a student’s strengths and weaknesses through observation. Taking detailed notes helps the teacher validate something the student does well and also,

helps the teacher activate future goals for the student to work on strengthening.

  • What strategies do they use?

  • What do they do when they get stuck?

  • Do they give up easily?

  • Do they learn from lessons, personal discoveries and mistakes?

  • Do they read?

  • Can they understand what they read?

  • What do they read?

  • What do they do well?

  • Do they set goals?

Anecdotal notes are taken during one-on-one conferencing and on the first day of the two day model of Guided Reading.
