ABC's of First Grade

Absent- When your child is absent, please call the school (927-3689) and notify them.  Let Becky know if you would like homework  sent home with a sibling or set out.  It is usually ready by 3 p.m.

Birthdays - Your child may celebrate on their actual birthday.  If they birthday falls on a weekend, they can let me know if they want to celebrate on Monday or Friday. If your child has a summer birthday, they can celebrate when they want.  I know some have celebrated on their half birthday or another day that works out.  2020 rule:  As much as we love home made treats, due to the current world situation, All treats must be prepackaged.

Church-  We attend Church every Friday morning, unless there is a Holy Day during the week, we may attend a different day.  They ask that children dress up for mass.

Drinks - If the students would like to bring a water bottle for a drink they may.  I give them time to get one after recess.

Envelope - Your child will be bringing home a book in an envelope.  Please read with your child, sign and send back to school as soon as your child is finished.

Flashcards -  Once your child has learned the strategies on how to solve them, study the flashcards each night for 10 minutes.

Goals - We help your child set personal goals to become the best student he/she can be!

Handwriting - This year we will be working on D'Nealian.

Inventive Spelling - The first form of spelling that your child will use when writing in their journals.  With time and practice it will soon transfer to standard spelling. 

Journals - The children will write in their journals on a weekly basis.  

Kindness - We expect the children to treat each other with kindness just as Jesus taught us.

Liturgy -  Your child will attend liturgy each Friday.  Our class will also participate in three liturgies throughout the year.  The dates for liturgies are:  and 

Money - Send all money in a well marked envelope.

Neatness - The children will strive to do their best with all work. 

Opportunity - The students will be provided with a lot of opportunities to try new things.

Book-It - Is now Movies to Books -  When students reach their goal, they receive a certificate for a free kid's combo at Castle Theater.

Quiet - We are learning to work on being quieter when we work and travel throughout the school.

Responsibility - First graders will be moving towards becoming more responsible for their own behavior, learning, and taking care of their own materials.  The taking home and returning of notes, book envelope, library books, etc... should be part of this routine.

Spelling - Your child will be bring home spelling list around the third week of school.  They will be bringing home  the list on Monday and taking a test on Friday.  You will be notified when they will begin.  I will also have them on the website.  The words correspond to our reading lesson for the week, so there maybe some weeks that we will not have spelling due to late starts, weather, etc... so that the words match our reading lessons. 

Take Home Folder - Your child has a folder that they will give to me each morning and I will put notes, papers, newsletters, etc and return at the end of each day.  If you have notes you want me to see, please put in the folder.

Unique - Each child is unique and we will try to capitalize on their uniqueness.  Your child is a special gift from God. 

Volunteers - Your helpfulness is the classroom is always welcomed. Volunteer forms are available from the office, but if you can only help occasionally, contact me and we can work something out.

Writing - The children will be given many opportunities to grow as writers. 

Exellence - The rate at which a child learns may not always be the same as their peers.  Please help us in encouraging your child to always try to do his/her best.  Be generous with praise and stingy with criticism.  Please be proud of what your child can do and try not to compare them with the accomplishments of others.

You - You are fundamental part in your child's learning. 

Zoo - At times our rooms may seem like a zoo but actually many different activities are taking place.
