Religion: Second Grade is a very formative year in our students' faith journeys. The students will be receiving two sacraments, Reconciliation and First Communion. In addition to these two important events, the students will be learning about Creation, the 10 Commandments, the Rosary, and other elements that will further their Christian journey through stories, discussions, and activities.
Literacy Block (Reading/Phonics/Language Arts/Spelling): The Wonders Reading curriculum, used Kindergarten-4th grade, provides the daily instruction needed to develop and build confidence in reading. Students are engaged through both fiction and nonfiction stories in large group, small group, and individualized settings. Fundations is the phonics program used in Preschool-3rd grade. Fundations is a multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that benefits all Preschool-3 students. Spelling, Language, and Grammar are integrated into the curriculum as well, giving students a complete literacy block.
Science: In Second Grade, students continue to learn through the use of hands-on FOSS Kits and Tara West Science. Students start the year learning about Earth Science through the "Pebbles, Sand and Silt" Kit. They learn about properties of Earth materials, weather, erosion, and natural water sources. Students will then learn about Physical Science while investigating "Solids and Liquids". Students will compare and contrast the properties of solids and liquids, explore their changes, and conduct experiments with both. Students will conclude the year with "Insects and Plants," the Life Science kit. They will be exploring life cycles and building on concepts of growth and development taught in Kindergarten and First grade.
Math: Our Engage NY Math curriculum guides students through the areas of addition and subtraction, measurement with metric and customary units, comparing numbers, place value through 1,000, understanding and solving word problems, foundational skills of multiplication and division, recognizing and understanding money, using and interpreting various types of graphs, telling time to one-minute increments, 2D and 3D shapes, and a basic understanding of fractions as parts of a whole.
