Sit with your child while he/she reads aloud to you. It is also important for your child to listen to you read stories aloud! Age is not a factor!
- Make sure your child is reading the words accurately.
- Use a dictionary to find the meaning of unknown words.
- If they are stuck on a word, they should:
- Try to sound it out.
- Use context clues (look at the pictures, think about the sentence)
- Skip the word and read the rest of the sentence – what word makes sense?
If they are still stuck, please tell them the word.
-At any point in the story, stop them and ask them what has happened or what they think may happen next.

- Who are the main characters? What are they like? Which character are you the most like?
- Where and when does the story take place?
- To tell you the story from the beginning. (They should give details from beginning to end.)
- What was the main problem in the story?
- How was the problem the solved?
- What does this story make you think of? Why?
- What was your favorite part? Why?
- What they think will/could happen after the story ends.
- If you could write a new ending, what would you write?
- Why do you think the author wrote this book? (to entertain/to persuade/to give information)
- Did the author have a message for the reader?
