8th Grade Mathematics
Textbooks: This year, students will not be given a textbook. I will, however, provide one for anyone who wants one to keep at home. You can use it for general reference, studying, and extra practice. Our curriculum does not follow the order of the textbook, however, most topics we cover can be found somewhere in the textbook.
Notebooks/Folders: Each student will be responsible for keeping a Math notebook and folder. These will be used for class notes and for homework. You are responsible for bringing your notebook and folder to class every day.
Grading System: Marking period grades will be the combination of common summative assessments, formative assessments, and homework. For the most part, assessments will be announced in advance. The percentage of total points earned from summatives, formatives, and homework will determine the final marking period grade.
Students will also be taking a final exam in this class. For Pre-Algebra students, this assessment will be counted as part of the 4th marking period grade. For Algebra students, this assessment will count as 10% of the final grade.
Classwork/Homework:
Each student is expected to bring 3 items with them to class each day:
Notebook 2. Folder 3. Pencil with an eraser (NO PENS)
Classwork/Homework assignments (teacher made assignments, IXL, Khan Academy) will individually carry small point values. By the end of the marking period, the completion of these assignments should total around the same points as a formative assessment.
Google Classroom and Sparta.org: Students and parents are encouraged to visit Mr. Frangione’s home page on Sparta.org. This page includes contact information, a supply list, a welcome letter, links to other cool sites, and other general information. Classwork/Homework assignments will be posted daily on the board in class and on Google Classroom. Homework should be written in the student’s assignment pad as well. Google Classroom will often have digital copies of classwork and homework activities.
