Fine motor skills are the ability to produce small, precise movements through the coordination of the muscles, bones, and nerves. Students spend a great portion of the school day performing a variety of fine motor activities, such as holding a pencil and writing, coloring, and using scissors to cut. Fine motor skills are also used to carry out self-help tasks, such as buttoning and unbuttoning a shirt, zippering a zipper, opening lunch containers, and tying shoelaces.
