The Advanced Placement German Language and Culture course is designed for students who wish to receive credit or advanced standing in college. This course prepares students to take the Advanced Placement exam in German. The AP course follows the College Board German AP themes: global challenges, contemporary life, personal and public identities, families and communities, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology. Extensive training in the organization and writing of compositions is included. At the completion of an Advanced Placement course, the majority of students are expected to perform in the Intermediate-High to Advanced-Low range of language proficiency. Students in this course must plan to speak the target language at all times. Students enrolled in AP classes are expected to take the AP exam.
"The AP German Language & Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP German Language & Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in German. The AP German Language & Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions)."
