2021-22 Girls in Math @South

Girls in Math @South meets  weekly for problem-solving sessions Saturdays, 2-3pm on Zoom.  These sessions are fun and interactive, with an emphasis on logical thinking. Meetings are  free and open to students in grades 4 through 8. Advanced 3rd graders are welcome to join. Register by completing the registration form.

The 3rd Girls in Math Day @South was April 9th, 2022.

Girls in Math Day is a free half day of activities for girls grades 5th through 8th, on the South Alabama campus. This special day offers fun math workshops led by women mathematicians. The girls will gain a new appreciation of mathematics, they will make new friends, and they will leave with a T-shirt and a goodie bag. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Early registration is encouraged.  The Girls in Math @ South  program is sponsored by an MAA Tensor Grant for Women in Mathematics and the USA Mathematics and Statistics Department.

Keynote Speaker 

Mrs. Jen Knutson

Jen Knutson is the Assistant Director of the University of South Alabama Archaeology Museum. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of North Florida in Anthropology and is nearly finished with her master’s thesis for the University of West Florida, also in Anthropology, with an Historical Archaeology focus. As a public archaeologist, Jen enjoys teaching the three thousand K-12 students who visit the Archaeology Museum each year,  is a middle school archaeology curriculum editor, as well as the vice-president of the Florida Anthropological Society. She lives in Mobile, Alabama with her husband and their two dogs and two parrots.

Girl in Math Day @South 2022 - Workshop Presenters

Dr. Lauren Grimley

Dr. Grimley is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Spring Hill College where she has taught the last 6 years.  She received her PhD from Texas A&M University.  Her research interests are in noncommutative and homological algebra as well as mechanical games.  She is passionate about equity and expanding access to STEM fields.


 Danielle O'Donnol

Dr. O'Donnol is an Assistant Professor at Marymount University, in Arlington, Virginia.  She is a white, queer, female mathematician.  She has three brothers and sisters who are all much older than her.  She is from Bloomington, Indiana, and has also lived in California, Oklahoma, Texas, Massachusetts, Virginia, and London England.  Dr. O'Donnol has loved math since she was small.  When not doing math, she enjoys climbing and static trapeze.  

 Ms. Kristal Webb

Ms. Webb grew up in north Alabama and found her love of mathematics at an early age. She earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and pure mathematics from Spring Hill College and completed a master’s degree in mathematics at the University of South Alabama. Ms. Webb is a math professor at the Alabama School of Math and Science.
