2018 Girls in Math @South

Welcome to Girls in Math @ South

Girls in Math Day is a half day event for 6th to 8th grade female students.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 29th, 8:30-1:30PM on the University of South Alabama Campus.

Math Day is a (free!) fun math event which aims to bring together students and women mathematicians.

The event will start with a keynote speech given by Professor Emeritus Susan Williams.

Two workshops will follow the keynote speech.

Please register early. This year, the program is open to 50 students, with acceptance on a first come first serve basis.

The program emphasizes applications of mathematics to the social sciences, art and science, while focusing on fun, hands-on activities. The workshop activities are designed to engage students of all academic levels.

Our goal is to create a positive perception of mathematics and promote positive beliefs regarding students’ abilities in mathematics.

All participating students will be provided a morning snack and lunch.

The girls will leave with a goodie bag, t-shirt and a fresh perspective on mathematics.

The Girls in Math at South program is possible due to an MAA Tensor Grant for Women and Mathematics.

Registration is closed!

The registration form can be found HERE.

Completed forms should be e-mailed to elenapavelescu@southalabama.edu, selvi@southalabama.edu or faxed to 251-460-7969

Workshop 2: Geometric Design

by MSc. Sarah Brewer

Alabama School of Math and Science

Students will learn how artisans throughout history have used classical geometric tools compass and straightedge to construct beautiful patterns seen in art and architecture around the world.
