Assessing Text Complexity:
Qualitative, Quantitative, Reader & Task Consideration
Qualitative
- Structure: conventional or unconventional?
- Meanings: explicit or implicit?
- Language: literal, figurative, or specialized?
Quantitative
- Includes word length, sentence length, text cohesion
- Can be calculated using computer software
- Measures we can use: Flesch-Kincaid and Lexile Framework
Flesch-Kincaid
The difficulty of any given reading passage may be assessed using the Flesch-Kincaid grade level score, which is available in Microsoft word. If you can highlight, copy, and paste your passage into a Microsoft word document, the program will generate the score from the spell check feature. Here is an example:

How to check for the Flesch-Kincaid grade level:
1. Copy/paste your text into MS Word.
2. Click File
o Options
§ Proofing
· …and then select the box to “show readability statistics.”
3. Click to check for Spelling/Grammar under the REVIEW tab.
4. Go through and complete the Spelling/Grammar check.
5. At the end, along with counts and averages, a readability score will be assigned.

Lexile Framework
Lexile measure is another way in which the diffculty of a passage may be determined. Many articles accessed through EBSCO and other databases have already received a lexile score, which is given in the search results.
