Marking period one introduces students to the fundamentals of drawing and various drawing techniques.

Techniques taught during this unit include; gradation, blending, hatching, cross-hatching and stippling. Also included are various drawing tools like using comparative measurement, using alignments and grids, overlap, contrast, simulating texture and detail.

Media used includes; graphite (pencil), ink (pen), and marker.

Assignments include; a drawing Portfolio, Still Life drawing, Line Design, Worksheets, Reading and Writing Assignments, Shading (Hatching, Cross-hatching, Stippling).

Concepts taught include; the elements of art and principles of design, drawing from various eye levels, balance, composition, shape, space, and texture.
