Narrative Checklist

Engages the reader with a "magnetic" opening/lead

Exposition provides necessary information so that the reader understands the setting and story

Establishes interesting characters using descriptions, dialogue, internal thinking, etc.

Sensory language, descriptive details, and figurative language are included

Specific and concrete sentences "show" (as opposed to just telling) the reader what is taking place

Transitional words and phrases and other techniques provide "fluency" and "voice" to the story

Appropriate amount of dialogue is strategically utilized to reveal character traits, provide "voice," convey emotions, etc.

Rising action is provided through a thoughtful sequence of events; these eventually lead to a "climax" in the story/narrative

The story has a resolution and ends in a "meaningful" manner

The story has a clear theme, message about life, and/or demonstrates a greater appreciation for something or someone

Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization (it's "I" never "i") is utilized
