Grades for Social Studies are weighted with 50% based on "Assessments" and 50% based on "Practice".
Assessments:
Quizzes and Tests range in value from 10 to 60 points. Students are given at least one week notice before each test. Detailed study guides are provided for all tests.
Retakes are optional for quizzes. In order to qualify for a retake, the student needs to meet with me to identify errors and complete and receive feedback on relevant “practice” assignments. Retakes must be completed within one week. The new score will replace the original score. After each test, all students will complete a graded reflection assignment. In this assignment, students will have the opportunity to correct errors made on the original assessment.
Projects and Inquiries range in value from 25 to 50 points. Most projects are started in school and completed at home.
Practice:
Practice Assignments are usually completed in class but at times may need to be completed at home. Some examples are maps, web quests current event summaries, comprehension questions and writing prompts. These range in value from 10 to 30 points. Many of these assignments may be completed more than once in order for students to receive a grade they are proud of. Late work will be accepted until the conclusion of each unit. If an assignment is more than a week late, the student must see me during Flex to complete a Student Late Work Reflection Form. Once a new unit has started, late work from previous units will not be accepted.
Student Responsibilities:
Homework assignments are independent of graded assignments. They are used to help improve study habits and promote self-direction. Homework is assigned when students need more time to complete tasks from the day's lesson and/or to prepare students for future lessons. Although it varies, homework is assigned approximately once a week.
If a homework assignment is completed on time to the best of the student's ability, the assignment will be recorded as "turned in" in the portal. If the assignment is not fully completed, the assignment will be recorded as "incomplete" in the portal. If the assignment is missing, the assignment will be recorded as "missing" in the portal. We usually review homework together in class and students that did not complete the assignment are invited to fill in the answers as we share them. If this is the case, the assignment may be recorded as "turned in late" and a note will be added such as, "Was missing. Filled in answers as they were shared in class". Periodically, homework will be collected and graded.
If a student misses more than three homework assignments in one quarter, I will contact the parents or guardians and we will work out a plan to get the student back on track.
