Ten Questions about Indoor Track

1. Can I letter for indoor track?

Indoor Track Lettermen Point System

An athlete must score 12 pts in the course of the indoor season to receive a letter

An athlete receives 3 points for finishing in the top 3rd of the competitive field in an event

An athlete receives 2 points for finishing in the middle 3rd of the competitive field in an event

An athlete receives 1 points for finishing in the bottom 3rd of the competitive field in an event

2. Do I have to pay?

Athlete’s entry fees will be paid for from the track club account until they fail to attend a meet in which they have registered to run. Once an athlete fails to compete in a registered event paid for by the track club, they must pay for meets themselves if they wish to continue competing.

3. Do I have to be eligible

Yes, because it is now a letter earning sport standard eligibility rules apply

4. When is practice?

Workouts will be posted outside of Coach Vecenie’s room for each individual group of athletes. Coach will be present to execute workouts and monitor lifting from 3:30 until 5:00 each day after school. Athletes may perform workouts on their own, but are expected to check in with coach Vecenie throughout the week to assess progress and health concerns.

5. Do I have to stay for the entire meet / Will there be transportation?

Coach Vecenie will drive a 9 person passenger van so athletes are encouraged to drive themselves if they are of age, and the van is filled. This is not outdoor track, so athletes may participate in their respective events and leave immediately after if they have transportation arranged.

6. What events are there?

Sprints – 60 Meter dash, 60 Meter hurdles, 200, 400, 4 x 200, 4 x 400, SMR

Jumps – Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault

Distance – 800, 1600, 3200, 4 x 800, DMR

Throws – Shot Put

7. When do practices start?

Distance runners will begin having workouts posted 11-16

Sprinters and Jumpers will begin having workouts posted 11-30

Throwers will have to arrange workouts with Coach Cooper beginning 11-30

8. Can parents attend the meets?

Yes parents are welcome to attend, but be warned it’s a little chaotic

9. Why is doing indoor track important?

Athletes need competition to continually push themselves to be better. These meets provide athletes the opportunity to continue training through the winter to be more prepared for the outdoor season in the spring. Furthermore, Indoor track offers the benefit of learning / trying new events in a low pressure setting, and allows coach to get to know new athletes to the team prior to the outdoor season.

10. Do I need a physical?

If you have already had a physical for a sport this school year you do not need a new physical. If this is your first sport of the school year you need a physical to compete. Any physical obtained to fulfill the indoor track requirement will also count for outdoor track. Finally, all athletes will have to fill out a YSU or TSTCA waiver form to compete.
